Curiosity's perilous landing? 'Cleaner than any of our tests'

Local scientist directly involved with the Curiosity Program which successfully landed a rover on Mars

At 10:24 p.m. PDT Sunday night, the Curiosity rover splashed into the Martian atmosphere at more than 13,000 mph. Then, for a moment, it appeared that NASA's nickname for Curiosity's daring landing sequence ? "seven minutes of terror" ? was coming true.

Inside mission control, an alarm flashed on engineers' computer screens warning that Curiosity was coming in at the wrong angle, a potentially fatal development that engineers could not correct because the landing was entirely automated. Then, a passing satellite indicated that it was ready to relay messages from Curiosity. But for 30 seconds, a lifetime in this context, no data arrived. When the data started flowing in, the spacecraft appeared to be moving more slowly than engineers had planned.

And then, just as quickly, it all disappeared. The craft was not moving slowly, but deliberately. It was simply taking its time to find a comfortable spot inside a 3-billion-year-old meteor crater. The data flow from the passing satellite began streaming across engineers' computer screens. Curiosity's "wrong" angle turned out to be statistical noise ? "just a puff of air," said Al Chen, a Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineer and a member of the mission's landing team.

Curiosity's landing, it turned out, was as close to perfect as an eight-month journey through space can produce. In interviews with The Times, engineers said initial reviews of Curiosity's final minutes in flight revealed a startling fact: the landing ran into fewer problems than any of the hundreds of simulations they had run over the last two years.

"It was cleaner than any of our tests," Chen said, shaking his head with amazement. "It was a blast."

The tension reached a boiling point at 9:49 p.m., when Curiosity began executing a series of "irreversible" maneuvers, including the first of 79 pyrotechnic explosions that readied the craft for landing.

At 10:08, another critical moment: Because the Earth had "set" below the Martian horizon, Curiosity had no direct contact with scientists back home. It needed a relay throw ? a "bent pipe" maneuver, in space-science parlance, in which a passing satellite would gather Curiosity's data and send it back home.

But the only satellite available wasNASA'sOdyssey, which was 10 years old and missing a key part. No one knew whether the satellite would cooperate. And then, it did. "They're going be there for us!" an engineer shouted across mission control, which erupted in applause.

At 10:13, mission control began receiving "heartbeat tones" from Curiosity, indicating that it was alive and emitting information about its journey.

At 10:24, the "seven minutes of terror" began. The spacecraft was already on the ground ? but because of the vast distance between Earth and Mars, scientists wouldn't know whether it was alive or dead for seven minutes.

Two minutes later, an engineer reported that the Odyssey satellite might be failing after all. The satellite was trying, but no data were coming through. "We have a connection. But we do not actually? " Before the engineer could finish the sentence, a strong stream of telemetry began scrolling across mission control's screens.

From that point on, hope rose with every maneuver. Some engineers clasped their hands tightly, as if trying to squeeze out the last of the danger. By now, many were sweating. "I was feeling ? everything all at once," said engineer Ray Baker.

Each successful step was met with a moment of applause.

At 10:29, Curiosity's parachute ? the largest supersonic chute ever used in space ? deployed, sharply reducing the spacecraft's speed.

Twenty-four seconds later, Curiosity released its heat shield. This was critical; the heat shield had been acting like a lens cap on a camera, blocking Curiosity's radar from seeing the ground to pinpoint its landing. With the radar on, scientists would now know in seconds whether the spacecraft was where it "thought" it was based on a course calculation that had begun with a relatively rudimentary alignment of the sun and stars.

Miguel San Martin, the chief engineer of Curiosity's guidance and control, glanced at his screen to see the results, and was dumbfounded. In its final seconds, Curiosity would require a correction of less than 10 feet, startling accuracy after a journey of 352 million miles. Curiosity also "knew" its velocity to within three feet per second.

At 10:31, the zany "sky crane" deployed, lowering Curiosity toward the surface beneath the now-hovering spacecraft.

At 10:32, Curiosity's wheels neared the ground.

Steve Sell, another member of the entry, descent and landing team, knew the craft was close. But it still had one critical task: firing a series of small explosions to sweep blades across the tethers that still connected it to the sky crane. It had to happen at precisely the right moment ? too early, and the craft could tumble to the ground; too late, and the sky crane could begin to drift and drag the rover by the tethers over the surface of Mars.

Ten seconds later, the charges fired, Sell said, slicing the ropes to cut Curiosity free.

The sky crane was now in the form of a jellyfish, with long, free-flowing tethers that looked like tentacles hanging below the domed "shell" that had spat out the rover seconds earlier. The crane's engines throttled up, casting it several hundred yards to the north, where it crash-landed, on purpose, to get it out of the way.

The rover was now alone, in silence, and safe. Mission control exploded with cheers and applause.

"We train ourselves for years to think the worst all the time," San Martin said. "You're in the shower thinking about what could possibly give you a bad day. That's what you do, and then you can never turn that off."

In the end, San Martin said with a wry smile, "we did well."

This is a guest post from Alfred Sansa.

Marketing Tips for the Emerging Small Business
All small business owners want to grow their businesses into something bigger and better. ?A lot of these small businesses have a lot of promise, but it seems that the deciding factor of who gets bigger and better depends on who markets themselves better. Marketing is tricky, especially for the smaller emerging businesses. ?Smart marketing involves having the best use of the resources required to build brand equity. ?Small emerging businesses may seem to be at a disadvantage with money and resources, but they actually have an advantage as they can be more experimental and flexible. ?Below are some great marketing tips that will help the emerging small businesses.

Elevate Brands ? All good companies have services and products that are good for the consumer. ?That is one thing that is always necessary and constant in the business world. ?However, how a company differentiates itself from others competing with them is in their brand equity. ?Small companies have to ask themselves what they do that is unique versus their competition. ?They need to stop, listen and know who their customers are. ?They need to build the brands they have before the consumer even comes in to purchase it. ?They need to involve the customer in their social media world.

SEO Culture ? Small businesses need to make it easier for people to find their website and make their searches for their products easy to find. ?They need to have a good keyword that is rich in its content for the customer and they must have great links from other websites that have a lot of traffic. ?Over half of the people that perform searches online share their recommendations with others. ?Take advantage of? SEO.

eCommerce Platform ? It?s important for small emerging businesses to make the best of their platforms so they can engage more in what the customer is saying to them and understand what the customer really needs or wants. ?They need to make the best of their promotional efforts as well as their merchandising. ?They need to optimize the ways in which they bring traffic to their website for more things than just sales. ?Always interact with the customer when you can. If you don?t know all about your customers, you?re not doing good business.

Social Media ? Two fantastic ways for a small emerging business to get involved in the social media is through be active on sites such as Twitter and Facebook as well as blogging. ?These are the easiest ways to reach the customer and find your audience. ?Let your personality shine and try to stay away from the business talk online, leaving that for an offline conversation. ?You will get some negative comments but you can be good about answering questions and blogging updates. ?Get the word out that you are there and you want to promote yourself and get to know your customers.

The heart and soul of marketing your business is in understanding that the customer wants and needs and putting a plan into action to meet those needs. ?The most effective way for an emerging small business to expand is by focusing on how to grow it the right way.

Golf's Hottest Island Has the Nation's Two Best Courses Larry Olmsted

Highland Links features three distinctly different 6-hole stretches, but the common theme is excellent par-3s throughout, like this one.

The nation is Canada. The island is Cape Breton in Nova Scotia. And if it is not already on your golf travel radar it should be ? and it will be, because it just keeps getting better and better ? with more to come.

Cape Breton Island occupies the northernmost part of Nova Scotia, and last year was named the ?Top Island Destination in the Continental US & Canada? by Travel + Leisure magazine. Its claim to fame has long been natural beauty, abundant seafood ? especially lobster, served every which way ? and Scottish heritage. It is home to tall jagged mountains, vast expanses of beautiful interior lakes and stunning coastline. The Cabot Trail, its scenic byway, is consistently rated among the best drives in North America the land teems with moose, bear, and even lynx, especially within Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

But suddenly Cape Breton Island is becoming famous for something else: golf. This newfound hoopla is mainly due to Cabot Links, a course that opened less than two months ago and is already being called one of the best in the world by just about every major golf publication, and is certainly THE biggest new golf course opening of 2012, anywhere. Departures magazine called it the only true links course between Ireland?s Ballybunion and Bandon Dunes in Oregon, a swath that covers about a quarter of the globe. The Wall Street Journal called it ?a true seaside links,? making it the first anywhere on the East Coast, while Score Golf, Canada?s biggest golf publication, described it not only as Canada?s best but the best course its editor had ever experienced, anyplace. The list of accolades goes on and on. And there is more to come ? the owners are already clearing land on dramatic clifftops next door for a second links course, expected to open in 2015, by the high-powered design duo of Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore.

But the best golf in Canada is nothing new here on Cape Breton Island, which has been home to what is typically the top ranked public course in the nation, Highland Links, since it was built in 1939. But you probably have never been, like most U.S. golfers, because the island is a bit tricky to reach. Now, with the addition of Cabot Links, a second must-play, it?s worth getting on the plane. Even high-end tour operator Perry Golf has added Cape Breton to its littany of world class destinations. I finally went, and was wowed by what I saw. I also discovered that it isn?t really that hard to get to Cape Breton Island. My non-stop from Boston to Halifax took just an hour, and there is also non-stop service from New York, Philadelphia, and other cities. It?s about a three hour drive from Halifax to Cabot Links. You can also change planes and fly into the closer regional Sydney airport. At the end of the day it takes about the same time to get to the tee from NY as it would to get to Scottsdale or Vegas.

Highland Links is owned by the Canadian government and sits within Cape Breton Highlands National Park, right on the Cabot Trail. Like the grand lodges of Yellowstone and other big national parks, the government operates an upscale resort hotel here, the Keltic Lodge, and the front desk is a short walk from the first tee, making it a perfect and easy place to base yourself for both golf and the exploration of the beautiful park and surrounding region.

The course is the seminal work of Stanley Thompson, aka ?The Toronto Terror,? easily the greatest Canadian golf course architect in history and part of a cadre of famous names like Raynor, MacDonald, Mackenzie, and Tillinghast who dominate the design discussion. Thompson rules the public (and private) course rankings in Canada long after his death, and early on got access to the nation?s most beautiful sights in and out of National parks, including legendary courses like Banff Springs and Jasper Park, both of which I have played, and both of which are undeniably impressive. But Highlands Links is the best of the bunch, and not surprisingly, has typically been rated Canada?s top public throughout the decades.

The best word to describe the course is tumultuous. There is nary a flat lie out there, and the fairways resemble a sheet of newspaper that has been crumpled into a ball and try as you might, you can never again get it smooth. This promotes an interesting and non-stop sequence of challenging lies, above and below your feet, even in the center of the fairway. Thanks to this, its prodigious length, tough greens, and often steeply uphill or steeply downhill approaches, the course is a formidable challenge. It is also beautiful and neatly divided into three 6-hole sections. It begins close to the ocean, hugging the coast and incorporating some salt water marshes. After the sixth it cross a bridge over a river and takes a decidedly mountainous turn, playing through a series of stunning valleys, so while the fairways are not canted, the major deficiency in most mountain courses, they are flanked by steep slopes and every approach is framed by impossibly majestic towering mountains. In fall, these slopes, which contain a mix of trees very similar to Vermont, explode in a natural fireworks display of colorful changing foliage. After twelve, Thomson purposefully installed a hefty quarter mile walking path along a river before the next tee, so that the player could ?collect his thoughts? before tackling the final third of the course, which returns to the coast. You can take carts at Highland Links and if you do, be prepared ? I have walked hundreds of rounds and this is the longest and most physical walk I have ever experienced in golf. It stretches over seven miles, which is two to three more than average.

There are lots of great holes on this course, and several were named to Golf Magazine?s compendium of the 500 Greatest Holes on Earth. The par-3s are especially strong, all stunners, including two in the first five holes. But what makes it truly special is how different every hole is from every other. It is almost clich? for courses to disclaim a signature hole by saying ?they are all so good and so unique,? and that is rarely true, but it is at Highland Links, a very special eighteen.

Because it is part of the park the course suffers from the double edged sword of amazing value and affordability, the downside of which is a rough around the edges approach to maintenance and facilities, The clubhouse is essentially a snack bar and the grass is not exactly manicured, but then again, with rates that are always below $90, afternoon fees of $65, and? a Sunday-special for two with cart at $65 a head, it may well be the best dollar for dollar golf in North America. In fact, golf is ludicrously cheap throughout Cape Breton Island, including Cabot Links, which commands about a third of what it could elsewhere, and there are several other golf courses on the island, many offering packages combing rounds and lodging through the official tourism entity, Golf Cape Breton.

Next I will take an in-depth look at the Cabot Links, the hottest new golf course on earth.
