The Sea Of Possibilities, Choices and Baby Boomers ? Buying Art ...

?This article is about how?baby boomers are about to leave the world, being spiritual and Choices.? We are experiencing the growth of two widely different ways of thinking, believing and doing.? The negative dis-empowering dark side forces behind our oppressive economic ?and social times, and the positive empowering forces of spiritual development.? Baby Boomers have experienced an amazing amount of change and some of the changes can be considered ?good?.? We have learned, worked, lived, prospered, gone to church and bought a bunch of stuff.? We have become insatiable, not intelligent consumers and our children have developed consumption into a fine art.? And, we have allowed the world to be what it is today by not paying attention to what is really going on around us and looking for fulfillment from outside ourselves.? The government seems to be the facilitator for the activities of the dark side and many feel powerless.

? This is a general election year and many, if not most, know that there is need for real change but the political system is offering us much more of the same.? We must know by now that corrupt organizations do not fix themselves from within.? We must remember that we are the consumers of the government and as such we have the ultimate control.? How much can we learn, change and do to become self- empowered?

? We have been adrift on a vast sea of possibilities for most of our lives and what most of us chosen to do is work so we can consume/buy bunches of stuff and the more money we earn, the more we can buy.? We have chosen to dis-empower ourselves. Most of us worked at jobs we didn?t like to pay for all the things we were taught to want. ?We bought insurance of all types, transportation that breaks down if we keep it too long, appliances that don?t last, cell phones, mind dulling TV and much more.? The amount of stuff we collected filled our garages so our autos sat outside and when our garages were full, we rented or purchased storage containers for even more stuff.? The question that has haunted me for years, has haunted philosophers and questioning thinkers for centuries, ?Is This All There Is??? This question existed before the dark ages and ended with the dark ages, when the church and the ruling class did all of the thinking (we may be experiencing some of that again).? Then came the time of Leonardo Da Vinci and others, when thinking and creating once again became possible and the great question was once again asked.? And, a few are asking it now.? Ivan Illich ?said ??Man Must Chose To Be Rich In Things Or The Freedom To Use Them?.? It seems that we have chosen to be rich in things.? I believe and know that there is a deeper more worthwhile purpose to life.

? I am a spiritual baby boomer, I don?t go to church and I am learning to become a much more intelligent consumer.? My autos can actually fit in the garage, we don?t need a storage building and just that makes me a wiser consumer.? I am not in the running for the, he who dies with the most stuff wins, title.? My parents were fairly average for their time, they both worked and they were consumers however not on today?s standards.? My father built our comfortably spacious 1,500 square foot home, plenty of room for the four of us.? We had a good used car and pick-up, a nice used boat, a hunting cabin and later we built a small cabin on a beautiful Montana lake.? My dad worked in a factory that produced lumber (lumber mill) for a growing nation.? I know that he was proud to be producing something, he was a consumer and our car fit easily into our garage.

?

? I have traveled, learned and experienced life since leaving my family home and home town.? In those years, others learned to work harder to produce more with fewer workers and to consume/buy more.? Our service society is established, being a consumer has gained new importance, our economic system depends on us buying a lot of stuff and the wealth of a few people also depends on you buying non-ending storage buildings full of stuff.? I have become somewhat un-patriotic.? I no longer support the system and I have found it easier to support me.

? Many fellow baby boomers also buy stuff to impress others, or at least to keep up with them. ?Their homes have gotten much bigger, more people in the U.S. are millionaires than ever before, the real income continues to drop and our homeless population has grown significantly in the last few years to more than three million.? Millionaires are increasing at about the same rate as homeless people (well not quite, but it is a good point to ponder).? It seems that our inhumanity has also grown in size and importance.? Houses of more than 3,000 square feet are common and those who own homes of more than 6,000 square feet are assured of a top position in those who die with the most stuff wins award.? Homes larger than 7,000 feet put the owners as leaders in the consuming and redundant wasting competition (there are more than a few).? If purchasing stuff puts one in the front running for arriving, they are there, but where? Again, there are about 3,000,000 homeless people in the U.S.? I am not common and live in a comfortable house that I can easily afford.

? I and some others of us, look to a beautiful starry night and see the expanse of the universe, possibilities and feel a part of something very large.? We spiritual baby boomers see homeless people and wish to do something positive and feel a kinship for all things.? Some others build huge structures and purchase lots of stuff to separate themselves from others, to make their lives better (they think).? Some think of what they can do to make the world a better place, do something to that end and are close to answering the questions ?Is This All There Is??? ? ?what can I do to help??.? RSBBrown ?
